The Little Red Hen
In the version of the story that was read to me as a child, the little red hen baked bread, and when it was finished, she ate it with her hatchling chicks – it took the aspect of a hard-working family vs greedy, lazy recipient-class society. It always seemed sad that the other animals didn’t recognize that all they had to do was assist her in her enterprise and they’d find themselves reaping the benefits of their combined efforts. The story above is much kinder to the other animals in that regard, showing that they’d learned the value of work by seeing the product of labor and thus desiring it for themselves.
The Modern Version
Without force to seize the little red hen’s work, the moral stands. But when the little red hen has the products of her labor seized, she can either work for increasingly diminishing returns as more and more animals live off the resources extracted from her labor, or she could take Francisco d’Anconia’s advice and… shrug.
